Operating the upscale hotel chain known as The Ritz-Carlton is the American multinational firm The Ritz-Carlton Hotel firm, LLC. In addition to 46 hotels with 8,755 rooms now under construction, the firm operates 108 luxury hotels and resorts with 29,158 rooms throughout 30 nations and territories. In Boston, Massachusetts, the new company was founded in 1983 after the former owners sold the Ritz-Carlton name and Ritz-Carlton hotel. The trademark was subsequently used in other places. The company was a part of Marriott International.

Albert Keller founded The Ritz-Carlton Investing Company after purchasing and franchising the name in the United States. In 1911, the first Ritz-Carlton Hotel in the United States opened in New York City. It was on Madison Avenue and 46th Street. The kitchens were run by Louis Diat, who created Vichyssoise there. In 1911, the Ritz-Carlton announced plans to expand to Philadelphia and Atlantic City. The Ritz-Carlton Philadelphia, designed by Horace Trumbauer and Warren & Wetmore, opened in 1913 at Broad and Walnut streets. The Ritz-Carlton Montreal debuted in 1912, but Keller did not own it because it was in Canada. Keller’s Ritz-Carlton Atlantic City first opened its doors in 1921.
