The 95th Academy Awards took over the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood on Sunday, airing live on ABC. Some of music’s biggest stars were present and represented, including Lady Gaga and Rihanna. The pop queens, both nominated in the best original song category and who headlined the Super Bowl halftime show, performed during the Oscars 2023 telecast. Jimmy Kimmel was the big Oscar host this year, marking the third time the late-night talk show host has emceed the Academy Awards. This year, for the first time since 1961, the Oscars’ outdoor carpet is not red. Host Jimmy Kimmel had another theory about the carpet colour change. “People have been asking if there’s going to be a problem this year. I certainly hope not. But if there is, I think the decision to go with a champagne carpet instead of a red carpet shows how confident we are that no blood will be spilt,” he said.

Traditionally, the Academy Awards red carpet is where the world’s most prestigious stars present themselves the way they will be remembered, in their finest finery and dreamy attire. The stars came out in force. Black, white and bold colours dominated one new look after another. Lady Gaga, who performed her song Hold My Hand from Top Gun: Maverick arrived in a black Versace gown with a sheer corset bodice. Florence Pugh wore black shorts with a dramatic cape, proving to be a true punk princess. Rihanna also looked totally hot in a laser-cut leather dress with sheer panels by Alaïa.

The queen of the red carpets arrived in a unique piece from the Italian firm Armani Privé, a unique design embroidered entirely by hand, where two camellias managed to captivate everyone’s eyes. She was certainly the centre of attention in this elegant black dress covered with sequins.

Cara Delevingne just reminded us of 2012 when Angelina Jolie’s right leg went viral. Cara wore an Elie Saab dress that exposed her legs with floral detail on the shoulder. She completed the look with snake-shaped diamond Serpenti earrings, rings, a twisted necklace and a Bulgari bracelet. She also wore Stuart Weitzman platform sandals.

Lady Gaga’s Versace dress came straight off the runway at Donatella Versace’s Fall 2023 runway show in Los Angeles last week. While the theatricality that often accompanies Gaga’s red-carpet moments is performance art, it was lovely to see her wear a dress that spoke for itself. The dress featured an all-black skirt that puffed out at the bottom and included Versace’s signature Medusa medallion at the waist to match the larger choker.

Ana de Armas, who was nominated best actress, wowed at the 2023 Oscars red carpet, wearing a shimmering silver mermaid gown by luxury fashion house Louis Vuitton. Her dress resembled one of Hollywood icon Marilyn’s most iconic on-screen looks from the 1957 classic The Prince And The Showgirl. The dress also featured a low-cut u-shaped neckline and had jewelled embellishments all over it. It also featured a long train which resembled flower petals.
