French designer Simon Porte Jacquemus, founder of the eponymous fashion house Jacquemus, unveiled his Fall/Winter 2022-2023 runway show “Le Papier” at the implausibly elegant Salin of Camargue in the South of France. Guests that attended said ‘it almost felt like the collections were being presented on the moon’. This location was the perfect backdrop for the pieces presented by the brand.

The last collections were very Pop,” designer Simon Porte Jacquemus wrote in a recent Instagram story, “I now go back to something more poetic.”

The collection celebrated the shared affinity that encapsulated the otherwise otherworldly vast Girauld salt marshes of France – chosen with the desire to highlight places with extraordinary simplicity, a minimal décor whose natural poetry is briefly interrupted by Jacquemus’ creative narrative.

Moreover, the collection emphasized on the artisanal exploration of natural materials and displayed the ingenious imagination of Jacquemus in a comprehensive harmony. The models descended from the salt dunes and travelled down the runway that had been carved out, each presenting a pallet of colours that reflected the setting. Designs presented tulle veils and modern trains which blew in the wind like an angelic bride.

The show began with a duo of models who danced as they presented the first of the 61 looks. From then, the models continued, presenting crisp white gowns with sheer materials, deep khaki and sandy cargo pants, brown and cream tailoring, and blue checked outerwear.

The designer said, “I started working on the collection with the obsession to restart from nothing, like a white page.” With 61 looks, these pages soon filled up and the collections presented were a huge success.

The collection depicted pure white tone pieces paying homage to Simon Porte Jacquemus’ childhood. Traveling back in time, the designer took us back to Provence’s central colours and fabrics, to a bygone era, to the memories of his grandmother Liline and their shared nostalgic passion for things of the past.

International celebrities such as Victoria Beckham, Vincent Cassel, Nathy Peluso and Tina Kunaki were in the front row to watch Simon Porter’s work. Some top models, from Vittoria Ceretti to Jill Kortleve, wore interesting looks with unusual volumes and overlays.

The theme of the Le Papier exhibition on French paper was white. The chalk paint used by designers was not just a trend, it had a wider meaning, associated with the concept of a blank sheet of paper, symbolizing a new life that can be written and dyed.
