WHAT IS THE 2023 MET GALA THEME?

This year’s Costume Institute exhibition, “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty,” will pay tribute to the work and life of famed designer Karl Lagerfeld, who passed away in 2009, and who will be the focus of the museum’s spring exhibition. Therefore, the dress code is “in honour of Karl.”

As Lagerfeld designed for many brands, as creative director of Chanel, Chloé, and Fendi, as well as his eponymous brand and his time at Balmain and Patou. Like his predecessor, Gabrielle Chanel, Karl was a tireless worker, who when he landed at Chanel in 1983 managed to bring the brand back into the industry spotlight.

The Met Gala 2023 attire will look at the relationship between the designer’s sketches and his finished creations throughout his entire career and how his ideas evolved from two-dimensional to three-dimensional. “Each of his designs began with a sketch,” commented Andrew Bolton, chief curator at the Costume Institute. “They may look charming and expressionistic to the untrained eye, but to his premiers, they were almost mathematical in their precision, almost like a secret language between Karl and the workshops.”

WHO IS ATTENDING THE 2023 MET GALA?

Among the co-anchors of the MET 2023 gala will be Spanish actress Pénelope Cruz, singer Dua Lipa, and Anna Wintour, among many others yet to be confirmed. We will see celebrities wearing Fendi, Chanel and the designer’s own namesake brand. For the third year in a row, everything points to Emma Chamberlain, Gen-Z’s favourite YouTube superstar, being the one analyzing each look.
