Gucci “Cosmogonie” Resort 2023 Collection Inspired by Constellations
Alessandro Michele’s Cruise 2023 collection for Gucci was a lesson in the stars.

Gucci’s Creative Director Alessandro Michele invited guests to Puglia, Italy to present his Resort 2023 collection for the brand. The runway show titled “Cosmogonie,” took inspiration from constellations, showcasing garments with details referencing the stars and magical myths.

“Cosmogonie” or “Cosmogony”, translated from French, refers to the study or the history of the universe—a lofty goal that only a designer like Alessandro Michele would take on as the theme of his latest Gucci collection.
“If any thinker was able to keep together things that were so distant in time and space, rearticulating them into bursting constellations, it was Walter Benjamin. To this man, who couldn’t survive without his quotations, my gratitude,” said Michele.

As Michele explained in the press release, the show was set in a 13th-century castle and was an ode to the German philosopher Walter Benjamin. “Such a remarkable ability to illuminate otherwise invisible connections made Benjamin a paragon of constellation thinkers,” the designer wrote.
“A term that he turns into a philosophical concept. What can seem, at first sight, atomized and dispersed, like the stars in the sky, through Benjamin’s eyes becomes an assembly of complicity: a connective structure that lights up the darkness through the epiphany of a constellation.”
“I was looking for a place which gave grace to the mythological,” he explained. “It’s a site where measurements and proportions cross each other as if by magic—the same way measurements of collars and jackets can be somehow magical.” For Michele, the mystery of Castel del Monte resonated with the enigmatic genesis of his creativity, “which operates through the need of putting together constellations of signs and symbols.”

The collection opened with a sheer, sparkly dress paired with a faux fur jacket, followed by standout accessories including lace-up thigh-high boots, color-blocked hats and red-tinted eyewear. Looks featured extremely sheer garments with rhinestone detailing resembling the stars, while a playful touch was added to a LBD ensemble with a strawberry-shaped crossbody bag. Elsewhere, models walked down the runway in metallic, glittery capes alongside sequined numbers in green, red and more.

And it’s not a Gucci show without a few (or an entire front row of) celebrity attendees. Major friends of the house including Dakota Johnson, Elle Fanning, Jodie Turner-Smith, Måneskin, Mark Ronson, Paul Mescal, and Lana Del Rey were all present to light up the Italian night sky with their stardom.
