Explore Fendi Resort 2023 Collection
Fendi celebrates 25 years of the baguette at NYFW with a collection inspired by the iconic bag.
One of the most iconic bags in the history of modern handbags turned 25 and Fendi held a celebration as big and bold as their beloved Baguette bag during NY Fashion Week.
The collection as a whole was complete and positively an ode to the Baguette, with everything from ready-to-wear and handbags to socks and hats dressed in a version of the Baguette. The pieces were inspired by the early days of the Baguette, particularly 1997, and Kim Jones expressed nostalgia for the 1990s in New York. The high/low mix of sequins with utility-inspired pieces spoke to that era of fashion, as did the hats, which came with mini baguettes built in.
“I didn’t want to do a traditional ‘collection’ for the anniversary. It’s more of a celebration of an era, of the time when the Baguette became famous. I relate that era to a sense of freedom in excess and fun, qualities that the Baguette possesses,” stated Kim Jones, Fendi’s Artistic Director of Womenswear, in a press release.
The Resort 2023 show was more than a show. It was a full-on party with a star-studded cast to match. The Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City was transformed into a stunning venue that matched Fendi’s latest collection, completely inspired by the Baguette.
Marc Jacobs designed a series of looks that made up “Part 2” of the show, for which each model wore a huge Jamiroquai-style fluffy hat reminiscent of the ones Stephen Jones made for Jacobs’ Fall 2012 collection. The quote Jacobs provided for the show notes was as strange and quirky as his designs.
“I have one word: Fendiroma – and it’s a word! It’s another land, this Fendiroma…. And I have two words: The Baguette. It’s a bag, and I’m never someone to scare.” an iconic bag.”
Tiffany & Co. also joined the festivities, collaborating with Fendi on the Tiffany blue versions of Baguette. Tiffany & Co.’s creativity and glamorous style were seen in the Baguette bag, made entirely of sterling silver and handcrafted over four months.
“It was a special day when I designed this bag; the stars aligned,” said Venturini Fendi, reflecting on the bag’s conception in 1997.
Jones put his undeniable stamp on the style through gorpcore baguettes, seen as cargo pockets on pants, jackets, vests, skirts, fleece linings, overalls, gloves, socks and even hats.
The front row was packed with some of fashion’s biggest stars, including Kate Moss, Kim Kardashian, Naomi Watts, Lori Harvey, Chloe Bailey and Sarah Jessica Parker, of course. There was even a small gathering of 90s supermodels off the runways with Kate Moss, Christy Turlington, Shalom Harlow and Amber Valletta.
